This establishing shot at the beginning of the trailer gives the audience an insight as to what sort of film it is. As it is a shot of London it suggests that the film will involve gritty realism making it relatable to the audience, leaving them wanting to watch the whole film.
The establishing shot is then closely followed by this high angle shot. This shot connotes that the protagonist is weak and vulnerable as it makes her look small. Also, she is sitting on the floor outside which makes her look even more vulnerable.
This close up is of the two characters both smoking a cigarette. The protagonist is only a child, aged 12, which therefore is very unusual that she is smoking.
This shot of the review is conventional as it shows that the film is highly rated by popular
newspapers, magazines, etc. These reviews make the audience want to watch the film and see how it ends as it has been shown to be popular and a good film to watch.
This close up shot shows the protagonist looking scared and unsure about what is to come. She is also wearing a red jumper and red lipstick, The colour red connotes danger, suggesting she is in some sort of trouble. This shot also contains low key lighting which is conventional in thrillers as it creates an intense dramatic atmosphere making the audience want to see the whole film.
This tracking mid shot from behind shows the two female characters being led into a hotel suite by an older man. The two female characters are portrayed as vulnerable as they are being led by a man in a suit. The suit connotes power and authority, furthering the suggestion that the protagonist and the other female character are weak.
These two close up shots show the protagonist and the other female character looking very worried about what is about to happen. The shot on the right shows the older man grabbing the protagonists arm. This connotes that he is being forceful which is conventional in thriller films.
This is a close up of the antagonist and his facial expression connotes that he is a very aggressive character. This close up, again, has very low key lighting which highlights the aggressiveness further.
This close up shows the female character crying and drinking alcohol. This exaggerates the fact that she is feeling scared and is dealing with her fear like a lot of people do; by getting drunk.
This shot is a high angle shot. These are conventional in thrillers as they are used to make the protagonist look weak. In this case, they want to make the female character look vulnerable as she is not in control of what is going on and is in a lot of danger.
The shot above is then closely followed by this fade to black. The fade to black is commonly used in thrillers as it connotes the ending and fading out of a life. Also, the colour black connotes death which is commonly associated with thriller films.
This over the shoulder shot of the female character looking in the mirror after the trouble has begun. This shot makes the audience feel included in the drama in the film which makes them all the more intrigued and therefore, wanting to watch the whole film.
These two shots are off centre close ups and extreme close ups. The fact that they are off centre creates a sense of mystery and confusion. The shot on the left shows the protagonist crying which connotes she is feeling very scared and/or in pain. The close up on the right shows that the character has a swollen, black eye indicating that she has been punched in the face. Crime and violence is a common convention in thrillers as they create drama.
This long shot of the antagonist connotes that he is powerful. This is because everyone else in the shot is located behind him connoting he has authority. As well as this, every other person in the shot is wearing black whereas the antagonist is wearing a blue shirt and a beige suite which makes him stand out.
This establishing shot is of a train. The two female characters are on there way to Brighton to try and escape the danger they are in. The mise en scene in this shot also help to identify the characters further. The setting looks very uncared for and abandoned, much like the protagonist.
This mid shot shows the antagonist holding a gun which is pointing at the two female characters. This is a common convention as guns connote violence and threat which appears in a lot of thriller films.
These two shots are the final shots in he London To Brighton film trailer. The titles really stand out due to the white writing contrasting with the black background. The black background is conventional as it connotes fear and mystery which is associated with the antagonist, whereas the colour white connotes purity and innocence which is associated with the protagonist.
